Rock climbing in San Diego high up on the Mountaineer’s wall at El Cajon Mt. Diego is showing us how it’s done! Beautiful lieback start… This one is a 5.11 mixed route with bolts and occasional trad gear. For longer than a decade Diego has climbed all over San Diego county establishing new routes and areas. He is now teaming up with @angelopez to promote climbing in Baja Calfiornia, Mèxico. It is amazing how much climbing there is just south of the border… and not many of us know about them. Scrambling in Joshua Tree National Park! There is probably no other place on earth where you can practice this wonderful skill better than there. Joshua tree is a wonderland of rocks… a complex cluster of stacked and piled rocks. Almost all rock peaks in JTree are accessible via scrambling. Scrambling is a form of fifth class hiking – hiking with constant use of hands – performing short climbing moves followed by immediate secure and flat stances! Scrambling is an essential skill for climbers. Often there is no option other than scrambling to approach the climb or descent from the climb. Scrambling is a rope less activity and should not be underestimated. A good spotter on a challenging section goes a long way and creates confidence to push you comfort level bit by bit. I also recommend to wear sticky rubber shoes for scrambling – this e is a hybrid of rock climbing shoes and hiking shoes. They grip much better in rock and add safety and comfort. Climbing in Joshua Tree and San Diego county gives you a lot of opportunity to rest and check out what's around you… a lot of the desert granite is low angle and it is very essential to get your footwork dialed. Unfortunately, many of the climbing gyms don't offer this type of climbing since their walls are mostly vertical or overhanging. Not in Joshua Tree – welcome t sale country, where even credit card thing old will get you to the top! Look down and cruise up! Good job Aaron
Good technique is key to good and smooth climbing. This one is a "step through" performed by Felix on his first rock climb. He is twisting his hips and steps his right leg underneath his left (cross). His left leg is almost fully extended and allows him to gracefully walk his right foot through.This is a nice way to reach your next foothold without having to match your feet or shuffle them over in caterpillar style. Remember!!! Rock climbing is mostly about using your lower body = legs, footwork. Your arms are holding you just in! Look down twice as much as you look up. Reminding yourself to do this will improve your technique much quicker. Pushing my hips into to wall, clinging onto credit card thin hand holds and working hard to stand up on the tiny little footchips below me. This is Joshua Tree slab climbing at its finest!! It usually feels harder than what it's rated! Once you topped out and look at the climb later you may find yourself surprised that it was even possible to climb this.
